Here, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, we believe in the principle of tithing.  This principle is found throughout the Old Testament scriptures (ie. Leviticus 27: 30, Numbers 18:26, Deuteronomy 14:24, II Chronicles 31:5) and was used as the way to support the House of God and its priests/ keepers of the House.  Today we continue to abide by the principle to support the upkeep of this house as well as the up building of the Kingdom of God.

What is a tithe?

Tithe is a one-tenth part, or 10%, of something/of total earnings, given as a contribution to a religious organization.  The tithe is the "first fruit" of your increase/income. The tithe is not any tenth of one's income; it is the first tenth (before taxes) of one's income. (Example. If your weekly income is $500 then $50 goes to support the House of God.)

 Why do we tithe?

The principle behind your tithe being your first fruit is you are recognizing God as your source of supply.  He is the cause of your prosperity and through your obedience to the principle you prosper.

What is an Offering?

Offering is a financial gift of any amount as God has prospered you over and above your tithe.  A thing offered, especially as a gift or contribution.  2 A contribution, especially of money, to a church.

What is the spiritual impact of following the principles of tithes and offering?

When you follow the principles of giving you are saying ‘God is first in my life’.  Over time you will notice changes and create a flow of blessing in your life. (and this may not take long… )

How should you give?

Cheerfully and Joyfully.  2 Corinthians 9:7- Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

When should I start tithing?

START NOW where you are- where your faith is.  You may not start with 10% but you may start with 3% or 5%, but start.  In time, your faith will increase and so will your giving.   Watch and see the Hand of the Lord work abundantly on your behalf- even the more.
